Hydroseeding Questions and Answers

Please reach us at luke.purcell@hydromulchandseed.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You, the homeowner should ask your  landscaper to contact Hydro Mulch & Seed because hydromulching delivers a healthier, more resilient lawn at a far better price than traditional turf.

Instead of laying pre‑grown rolls that often struggle to root and can fail in Melbourne’s unpredictable weather, hydromulching establishes grass directly in your soil, creating a deeper, stronger root system from day one. The mulch layer locks in moisture, protects the seed, and promotes even germination, meaning fewer bare patches and far less watering during establishment.

It’s also ideal for large or uneven areas where turf becomes expensive and difficult to install. By choosing hydromulch, homeowners get a greener, longer‑lasting lawn while saving significantly on installation costs and landscapers get a reliable, professional service that ensures their projects look great and perform well. That’s why it makes sense to have your landscaper bring in Hydro Mulch & Seed for the job.

Growing a lawn from seed is often the better long‑term choice because it creates a stronger, healthier lawn that’s actually adapted to your soil and conditions, rather than forcing pre‑grown turf to survive a stressful transplant.

When you seed, the grass develops its root system naturally and deeply from day one, which means better drought tolerance, better resilience in heat, and far less watering once established. Instant turf may look good on day one, but it frequently suffers transplant shock, dries out quickly, and can fail if not watered heavily for weeks. Seeding also gives you a more even, uniform lawn because the grass germinates across the whole area at the same time, rather than relying on turf rolls to knit together.

And of course, it’s dramatically more cost‑effective—especially for large areas—while still delivering a lush, durable lawn with a bit of patience. In the end, waiting a few weeks for seed to grow often results in a stronger, greener, longer‑lasting lawn than turf ever can.

Optimal Timing in Melbourne’s Climate

  • Late winter → early spring (August–September)
    • Soil is moist from winter rain.
    • Temperatures are warming but not hot.
    • Ideal for cool‑season blends (fescue, rye, Kentucky bluegrass).
  • Spring → late spring (October–November)
    • Still enough rainfall for germination.
    • Warmth accelerates establishment.
    • Good for warm‑season species (couch, kikuyu) and mixed blends.

Why this period works best

  • Consistent moisture: Melbourne’s winter–spring rainfall keeps the hydromulch layer moist, reducing irrigation needs.
  • Mild temperatures: Avoids the extremes—cold slows germination, heat stresses seedlings.
  • Lower wash‑off risk: Heavy summer storms are less common in this period, reducing erosion or slurry movement.

Preparing the ground properly is one of the biggest factors in how well your Hydromulched or revegetation area establishes.

Finalise all earthworks before anything else.

  • Ensure the surface is smooth, even, and free of ruts or depressions.
  • Aim for a consistent fall so water doesn’t pool.
  • On batters, ensure the slope is stable and compacted to spec.

Remove debris and contaminants

  • Clear rocks, sticks, rubbish, and construction waste.
  • Remove weeds or spray them out beforehand.
  • Hydromulch performs best on a clean, uniform surface.

Prepare the soil surface

  • Lightly scarify or rake the top 10–20 mm of soil.
  • Break up crusting so seed can make contact with soil.
  • Avoid deep cultivation —too much disturbance can cause erosion.

Improve soil where needed

This depends on the project type:

  • Topsoil: Spread and level if required by spec (usually 50–100 mm for lawns, less for native reveg).
  • Soil amendments: Lime, gypsum, compost, or fertiliser if specified.
  • Civil projects: Often require a slow‑release starter fertiliser applied before or within the hydromulch mix.

Ensure good moisture

  • Hydromulch sticks and performs best on slightly damp soil.
  • If the site is bone‑dry, a light pre‑wet helps the mulch bond and reduces dust.

Final check before spraying

  • No machinery tracks or footprints.
  • No loose clods or large stones.
  • Access is clear for the hydroseeder.
  • Irrigation (if used) is ready to run immediately after application.

While we do not offer ongoing maintenance services, we can provide guidance on proper care and maintenance. We also have a great relationship with one of the largest gardening services in Victoria and would be happy to negotiate a very favourable price for ongoing services
